Vein Thrombosis

Venous thrombosis, sometimes referred to as DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or SVT (superficial venous thrombophlebitis), occurs when a blood clot develops within the deep or superficial venous systems. DVT’s and SVT’s can occur anywhere throughout the body, but most commonly occur in the lower legs or thighs.

Although deep vein thrombosis can produce life-threatening conditions, only about half of the people diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis have symptoms. Visible signs of a DVT or SVT may include pain, redness, warmth to touch, swelling or changes of skin color in the affected leg. It is important to contact a vein specialist immediately if you notice any of these symptoms.

Risk Factors for Deep Vein Thrombosis

The development of a blood clot within a vein may be caused by a number of hereditary and acquired conditions. Risk factors for developing deep or superficial vein thrombosis include:

• Venous Insuffiency or Varicose Veins
• Oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy
• Cancer and/or chemotherapy
• Advanced age
• Major or orthopedic surgery
• Trauma or injury
• Prolonged immobilization or sedentary lifestyle
• Heredity blood-clotting disorder (hypercoagulable state)

Diagnosing Deep Vein Thrombosis

The vein specialists at the Goldman Vein Institute, Dr. Goldman and Dr. Varghese-Goldman, use advanced duplex ultrasound technology to diagnose deep or superficial vein thrombosis. This non-invasive diagnostic technique takes less than 15 minutes and can be completed in our offices.
