How Winter Weather Affects Vein Health

There are many factors that can affect vein health and the weather is certainly one of them. Changes in temperature go hand in hand with changes in atmospheric pressure. Spider veins and varicose veins can result from excess pressure on veins, and increases in atmospheric force can create further stress on veins. In addition, the body’s circulatory system is somewhat less efficient in colder weather.

To add to the problem, during colder months many people prefer to stay indoors, and often their lifestyles become considerably less active than during the warmer seasons. Since standing still and excessive sitting are both factors associated with increased risk for varicose and spider veins, this inactivity can also cause problems for weakened vein valves in the legs. Along with extended sitting, added weight due to inactivity can put even more strain on veins.

However, the winter can be the best time to treat unwanted spider veins or varicose veins. During these months, it is often more comfortable to keep legs covered, protecting them from the harmful effects of UV light after treatment, in addition to allowing further opportunities to keep legs elevated for faster healing.

This winter, it may be time to discuss the two highly effective, non-surgical varicose vein treatment options available with a specialist vein doctor. A vein specialist doctor can explain how endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy for spider veins, can help in only minutes per leg, and that can be completed in the comfort of the office, without hospitalization or a surgery center.

Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long-lasting scars or keloids. There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
