The Link Between Heart Health and Leg Vein Health

Arteries carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the feet, while veins return the blood from the feet back up to the heart. Normally, one-way valves inside the veins prevent blood from flowing backward, but if the valves become deformed, they don’t close properly. Blood flows backward, pools, and enlarges the veins. The resulting twisted blue or purple bulging veins are known as varicose veins. Smaller spider veins can be a symptom of poor circulation or an indication of increased risk for varicose veins.

While the presence of varicose veins or spider veins indicates a blood flow problem, they don’t cause or indicate heart problems. However, for some people, these veins could be a warning sign of serious underlying health issues, and people who suffer from both heart disease and varicose veins may be at increased risk to develop infection and swelling.

Untreated vein disease is progressive. If left untreated, varicose veins may lead to a chronic inflammatory condition in the veins or the formation of blood clots, which can break free and travel to the lungs, causing a potentially fatal pulmonary embolism.

If you have varicose veins or spider veins, it’s important to have an evaluation with a varicose vein specialist. A specialist vein doctor can help you determine the appropriate options for your vein disease treatment.

Two highly effective modern therapies, sclerotherapy for varicose veins and endovenous laser ablation can provide treatment with minimal discomfort and most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease when medically necessary.
