September is National Vascular Disease Awareness Month!

National Vascular Disease Awareness Month brings attention to one of the major causes of disability and death. Vascular disease and its associated conditions such as peripheral artery disease, chronic venous insufficiency, blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, and varicose veins are both major and growing health concerns.

Vascular disease is any abnormal condition within the extensive network of the arteries and veins in the body. Everyone is at risk and as the population ages, vascular diseases are becoming epidemic. Certain conditions such as obesity and type II diabetes also contribute to further risks and complications.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition that leads to narrowing and hardening of the arteries that supply blood to the legs and feet, resulting in decreased blood flow, which can injure the nerves and other tissues. PAD is estimated to affect over eight million people.

Chronic venous insufficiency happens when the veins in the legs do not return blood to the heart and upper body properly. The veins work toward keeping blood flowing back toward the heart and valves within the veins help to stop the blood from flowing back down to the lower extremities.

When the valves in the veins have become damaged, blood may flow backward and pool in the legs, leading to risks for varicose veins, leg ulcers, blood clots and other serious complications such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

For those who are experiencing varicose veins or other effects of chronic venous insufficiency, and who would like a non-surgical varicose veins treatment option, a specialist vein doctor can recommend two highly-effective treatments to consider, sclerotherapy for varicose veins and endovenous laser ablation.

With these therapies, there’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. In fact, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
