Pregnancy and Varicose Veins – What You Need to Know

During pregnancy many changes can occur in a woman’s body, and among those changes, may be the development of varicose veins or the appearance of spider veins. Several factors can contribute to the formation of these varicose or spider veins, including increased pressure on the veins and hormonal changes.

Pressure from the uterus on the major vein that carries blood from the legs and feet to the heart combined with the blood volume increases during pregnancy can cause veins to become enlarged. In addition, increased levels of the hormone progesterone can cause dilation of the veins.

There are many things that may help to avoid further strain on veins, such as controlling weight gain, wearing compression stockings, elevating the legs, and staying active, and these unsightly veins may shrink or disappear after birth.

However, whenever varicose veins appear, whether due to pregnancy or not, it is a good precaution to have them checked by a varicose vein specialist due to the association between varicose veins and the risk of deep vein thrombosis or blood clots.

When varicose or spider veins don’t go away, a vein specialist doctor can also give advice about laser vein removal surgery. These procedures take only minutes to do and require no hospitalization or surgery center.

There are no long-lasting scars or keloids, there’s minimal discomfort, and with these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
