Over 10% of the U.S. population is affected by the disorder Restless Leg Syndrome, most commonly in the middle and older age groups. It is characterized by uncontrollable urges to move the legs and may include itching, burning and tingling sensations. Symptoms are generally worse when lying down and are relieved by movement or walking, and sufferers may have trouble falling or staying asleep.
Another disorder known as periodic limb movement disorder (PMLD) may have many different causes, but occurs in about 80% of those with restless leg syndrome. The symptoms are repetitive limb movements that occur during sleep and cause sleep disruption. This limb jerks cause frequent awakenings from sleep and can result in daytime fatigue or sleepiness.
There are many causes related to RLS and PMLD including diabetes, iron deficiency, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, spinal cord trauma, stimulants such as caffeine, side effects of some medications, alcohol, pregnancy, drug withdrawal, anemia, and chronic liver or kidney failure. It is also believed to be associated with peripheral neuropathy, Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders.
However, recent medical research indicates that nearly one fourth of patients with RLS also have venous insufficiency and that treatment of venous insufficiency can relieve the symptoms of RLS. Venous insufficiency is when there is inadequate flow of blood through the veins most often caused by varicose veins and spider veins, resulting in the blood pooling in the legs. Fortunately, according to one study of patients with RLS and venous insufficiency, 98% experienced relief from RLS symptoms by simply treating their venous insufficiency.
Our expert venous specialists can provide effective periodic limb movement disorder and restless leg syndrome treatment. There’s minimal discomfort, and treatment is virtually painless, and with modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment.
