Can Physical Activity Help Prevent Spider Veins?

Many people suffer from spider veins, especially those who spend their work days sitting for long periods of time in an office. Spider veins in legs can cause swelling, pain, and appear unsightly. Although there are many causes that may contribute to spider veins, exercise can help prevent them.

Walking is one of the easiest, most practical, and effective ways to help prevent spider veins in legs. Keeping the legs in motion improves their circulation. Breaking up hours of sitting with even short periods of movement is helpful. Activity can be increased in small ways such as parking a little further away, going for a brief walk at lunch, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

Taking a bike ride if one is available or just lying on the floor, with legs elevated and pedaling as if on a bike improves circulation. Any moderate exercise that improves circulation and tones muscles can reduce the risk of developing spider veins in legs, and slow or prevent the development of new ones.

Facial spider veins can also be affected by exercise, since it can improve vein, skin and overall health. Increasing activity can affect how well the veins function, work and repair. In fact, sometimes broken capillaries on the face are a result of stress and insomnia, which can be reduced through a moderate exercise program.

If spider veins are already present on either the legs or face, vein treatment is available. Vein sclerotherapy can be performed in a vein specialist’s office and can provide relief from spider veins. This vein treatment not only minimizes their unsightly appearance, but can also provide relief from tired, aching, cramping, and restless legs.

Studies have shown this safe, effective treatment can eliminate as many as 50–80% of treated veins after just a few sessions. Sclerotherapy sessions are typically completed within 20 minutes per leg, and most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment.

During this procedure, a tiny needle is used to introduce an FDA-approved sclerosant into the vein, drops at a time. This gentle, yet effective FDA approved medication causes the vein to collapse and close.  Over time the closed vein gets absorbed by the body and disappears.  The vein specialists initiate the process and the body does the rest, naturally.
