Why Women Are More Likely to Have Varicose Veins
Women are more at risk for developing varicose veins and are also more likely to develop the problems associated with them. Studies indicate that this is likely due to higher levels of the hormone progesterone that are produced by women than men, especially during pregnancy.
Progesterone causes blood vessel walls to relax. When they do, the small valves within the vessels also relax. Therefore, the pressure from blood as it flows through the dilated veins pushes out on the sides, making them weaker.
Additionally, during pregnancy other factors can contribute to the formation of varicose veins. Increased pressure from the uterus on the major vein that carries blood from the legs and feet to the heart combined with the blood volume increases during pregnancy can cause veins to become enlarged.
However, whenever varicose veins appear, whether due to pregnancy or not, it is a good precaution to have them checked by a varicose specialist vein doctor due to the association between varicose veins and the risk of deep vein thrombosis or blood clots. A specialist vein doctor can also give advice about laser vein removal including sclerotherapy for varicose veins and endovenous laser ablation.
These procedures take only minutes to do and require no hospitalization or surgery center. Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long-lasting scars or keloids. There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
