What Sports and Exercises Can Help Prevent Spider Veins?

Spider veins in legs can cause swelling, pain, and appear unsightly. Although there are many causes that may contribute to spider veins, a moderate exercise program can help prevent them since it can improve vein, skin and overall health.

Increasing activity can affect how well the veins function, work and repair. Strong leg muscles create more intense muscle contractions, which keep up the circulation of blood and reduce blood pooling. Walking is one of the easiest, most practical, and effective ways to help prevent spider veins in legs. Keeping the legs in motion improves their circulation.

Breaking up hours of sitting with even short periods of movement is helpful. Activity can be increased in small ways such as parking a little further away, going for a brief walk at lunch, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

Swimming also builds leg strength and enhances blood flow. The increased buoyancy and reduced gravity that water provides decreases pressure on spider veins, thereby enhancing circulation. Additionally, exercising in water can be easier on joints, improves flexibility, and is cooler during warm weather too.

Taking a bike ride if one is available or just lying on the floor, with legs elevated and pedaling as if on a bike improves circulation. Any moderate exercise that improves circulation and tones muscles can reduce the risk of developing spider veins in legs, and slow or prevent the development of new ones.

Aerobic exercise such as walking, biking, and swimming, are all good activities for getting blood circulating and promoting healthy veins. However, it’s important to be careful not to overdo when you have spider veins, as strenuous activities can put too much strain on the legs.

Although exercise should always be part of a healthy lifestyle and may improve or prevent spider veins, it typically won’t eliminate them. However, modern spider vein treatment can. If spider veins are already present, vein treatment is available. Laser treatment for spider veins not only minimizes their unsightly appearance, but can also provide relief from tired, aching, cramping, and restless legs.
