What Causes Bulging Veins?
A common cause of bulging veins in legs is varicose or spider veins that appear below the surface of the skin and cause bulgy patches visible. These bulging veins are usually dark purple or blue and may also cause those who suffer from them pain or discomfort. Spider veins are simply the milder version of varicose veins.
Within each vein is a sequence of valves that stop blood from flowing backward, but if the valves aren’t functioning properly, blood can pool inside the vein. When the vein walls weaken, bulging veins can appear. Aging can contribute to this weakening and so can pressure on the veins due to pregnancy.
Another cause of bulging veins in legs is a condition called thrombophlebitis, which occurs when a blood clot forms within a vein. This is a potentially serious condition that can carry fatal risks if the clot moves to the lungs and blocks an artery.
How can bulging veins be treated?
A specialist vein doctor can perform an examination to determine the cause and suggest the appropriate bulging veins in legs treatment. Two highly effective, modern techniques include:
- Endovenous Laser Thermal Ablation – After a local anesthesia is administered, the varicose vein specialist doctor introduces a small catheter into the vein with ultrasound guidance. This is followed by a small laser fiber, which delivers gentle laser energy, causing the vein to close. The procedure takes only about 10 minutes to do and requires no hospitalization or surgery center.
- Sclerotherapy – During this procedure, the vein specialist uses a tiny needle to introduce an FDA-approved sclerosant into the vein, drops at a time. This gentle, yet effective medication causes the vein to collapse and close. Over time, the closed vein gets absorbed by the body and disappears. The sessions are typically completed in the office, within 20 minutes per leg.
Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long lasting scars or keloids. There’s minimal discomfort and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
