Inside the Duplex Ultrasound Examination Process

Duplex ultrasound is an evaluative test, which uses sound waves to create pictures of the anatomy and the flow of blood through the veins. Additionally, it can make graphs that indicate both the direction and speed of the blood flowing through the vessels. The images and graphs it provides can then be viewed on a computer screen.

A duplex ultrasound doesn’t require the use of dyes or radiation, and is even safe during pregnancy. This examination is performed to provide information to a vein specialist doctor (phlebologist), for the evaluation of certain symptoms, such as leg pain or swelling from varicose veins or spider veins. After viewing the images from this test, a diagnosis can be made and the physician can provide guidance for a varicose vein treatment or spider vein treatment plan.

When you need relief from swollen, twisted varicose veins or unsightly spider veins, new technology has made vein treatments virtually pain-free, and with no down time required. With endovenous laser thermal ablation, a local anesthesia is administered before a varicose vein specialist introduces a small catheter into the vein with ultrasound guidance. This is followed by a small laser fiber, which delivers gentle laser energy, causing the vein to close. The procedure takes only about 10 minutes to do and requires no hospitalization or surgery center.
