Get Rid of Your Spider Veins with Sclerotherapy

When was the last time you wore something short?

If you’ve been covering up your spider veins for a long time, there’s now a simple, minimally invasive treatment that only requires a few injections, allowing you to go back to wearing shorts and dresses confidently. This treatment ensures that both the spider veins and the itchiness disappear for good.

At Goldman Vein Institute, with offices in Jupiter and Wellington, Florida, Alexander Goldman, MD, RVT, RPVI, and Saluja Varghese-Goldman, MD, RVT, RPVI, use sclerotherapy to eliminate spider veins in their clients. Read on as we ask them to explain how the procedure works, what to expect, and who is a good candidate.

Spider veins 101

Your veins have one-way valves. When these valves weaken, blood may flow backward instead of following its normal path. The extra blood left behind accumulates, putting pressure on the vein walls, damaging them, and ultimately causing spider veins.

Pressure on the veins and damaged valves are the main causes of spider veins, and these often occur due to hormonal changes, increased pressure on the legs, or prolonged standing.

Treating spider veins with sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a treatment that involves the injection of a special medical solution. Once injected into the affected veins, they collapse and eventually fade. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and can even be done during your lunch break. It takes only about 15-30 minutes to inject the veins, after which you’ll be advised to wear compression stockings to aid healing and improve circulation.

Depending on the number of veins affected and the severity of the condition, you may need multiple sessions to remove all the damaged veins.

In the 48 hours following treatment, you’ll also be asked to avoid sun exposure and hot baths on the treated areas.

What to expect from sclerotherapy

Treating damaged veins not only improves the appearance of your skin but also relieves symptoms such as aching or swelling. Over the course of a few weeks, the treated veins gradually disappear as your body absorbs them. Clinical data shows that over 90% of patients treated with sclerotherapy experience significant symptom improvement.

Good candidates for sclerotherapy are in overall good health and do not have serious vascular conditions. For larger, bulging veins, our experts use endovenous thermal ablation (a laser treatment) as an alternative.
