Can Yoga Help with Leg Pain and Varicose Veins?

Although exercise should always be part of a healthy lifestyle, leg pain from varicose veins can make exercise difficult. Also, it is important to be careful not to overdo when you have varicose veins, as strenuous activities can put too much strain on the legs.

Yoga combines both stretching and muscle strengthening that can improve circulation and muscle tone, and which may reduce the risk of developing varicose veins or help to keep them from becoming more chronic. However, certain poses are better than others for those who have varicose veins or for those who are at increased risk for developing them.

The recommended poses are typically ones in which the legs are elevated. These poses can reduce swelling and pressure, in addition to helping blood return from the legs back to the heart. Poses such as Elevated Legs Up the Wall, Boat Pose, and Supported Shoulder Stand are examples of these kinds of poses.

However, some poses may put excessive strain or stress on the legs and should be avoided. In order to best reduce any risks, it is recommended to consult your vein doctor. Additionally, a good yoga instructor can provide guidance on avoiding any poses that may be beyond the level of one’s experience.

Although low impact exercise such as yoga might help with your leg pain from varicose veins, treating varicose veins once they appear is best explored at your vein specialist’s office. While exercise can help the symptoms of varicose veins, it won’t remove them.

Yoga may not treat varicose veins, but a vein specialist can, with modern laser surgery for varicose veins. Aside from cosmetic concerns, vein disease is chronic and progressive. Without varicose veins treatment, the symptoms and health risks worsen, and may include varicose veins bleeding or leg ulcers.
