Vein Disease and Weight Gain – Is There a Connection?

More than a third of the adults in the U.S., or nearly 100 million people, are considered obese. Those who are overweight or obese are not only at higher risk for chronic conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes, but the additional pounds can also put a strain on their veins.

In obese patients, the extra weight adds pressure on the veins and that return blood to the heart and to the valves inside those veins. This can cause blood to build up inside the veins, resulting in the development of varicose veins.

Additional weight can also increase the risk of experiencing uncomfortable symptoms such as leg fatigue, heaviness or aching, pain, cramping, swelling, itching, skin changes or restless legs. Unfortunately, those who experience these symptoms are less likely to exercise due to discomfort and the difficulties of doing so. Since lack of activity can worsen the condition, an unhealthy and uncomfortable cycle can occur.

However, although people who lose weight typically feel better and enjoy the reduced risk for many chronic conditions, they may be disappointed by the appearance of varicose veins that were previously hidden behind layers of fat.

The good news is that there are two excellent vein disease treatments that can help. In fact, often those that receive vein disease treatment find it helps them with working toward a healthy diet and exercise program to shed pounds.

These two highly-effective treatments performed by a specialist vein doctor include endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy for varicose veins. These gentle procedures take only minutes per leg are typically completed in the office.

Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long-lasting scars or keloids.┬áThere’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
