5 Questions to Ask When You’re Looking for a Vein Doctor

When varicose or spider veins are a problem and it’s time to seek advice, you want to consult with a vein doctor who is both caring and competent. However, it’s not always easy to know how to choose the right physician who can provide the specialized care to accurately diagnose and treat vein disease at the source rather than treating vein disease as an aesthetic issue. Asking these five questions can help guide you:

  • Is the vein doctor a Board Certified Phlebologist? – Phlebology (Vein Specialty) Board Certification demonstrates expertise and commitment to treating clinical conditions associated with venous conditions, such as spider veins, varicose veins, venous stasis ulcers and deep vein thrombosis.
  • What is the vein specialist’s educational background and how many years experience does he/she have? After receiving an undergraduate degree, completing four years of medical school, and then three years of residency, did the vein doctor continue his education to become a specialist in treating venous disorders? You want someone who is highly experienced and well educated in treating your specific medical issues.
  • What other certifications and professional memberships does the doctor maintain? A vein doctor who is an active member of his/her professional associations and maintains pertinent certifications (such as a Diplomat of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine or with the ARDMS as a Vascular Technologist (RVT) and Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) is a doctor who is dedicated, specialized, and who stays abreast of the latest treatments.
  • What treatment options does the vein specialist doctor offer? Look for a physician who offers a variety of non-surgical, highly-effective methods for treating your condition; including endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy for varicose veins.
  • How is the doctor’s staff? Are they highly-trained in the medical field and have excellent customer service skills? Are they honest, reliable, and concerned about your health and well-being? A doctor’s medical and support staff should reflect his professionalism and dedication to treating your venous disease.

What is Vein Disease All About?

One of the most common conditions that can affect the overall health and wellbeing of both men and women of all ages is vein disease. Veins have valves which open and close to help return blood to the heart, but if these valves become damaged the blood can’t be properly returned. Therefore, blood can pool in the legs and weaken the vein walls due to the pressure. Additionally, as time goes by, the increased pressure can cause more valves to fail.

Some people may have visible signs of vein disease, such as varicose or spider veins, whereas others may have no outward indication. Spider veins are a symptom of early stage vein disease, and treating them can help stop their progression and improve their appearance. In addition to causing pain and discomfort, unsightly, bulging varicose veins that are left untreated can lead to additional health issues and a progressively worsening appearance.

What are the risks and treatments for vein disease?

The risks may include skin problems such as serious bacterial infection, discoloration due to blood leaking from the vessels and into the tissue, skin thickening or ulceration, and eczema. Other indications may be leg cramping, restless leg syndrome, or swelling, and there are risks for even more serious complications.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of vein disease, it’s important to have an evaluation with a specialist vein doctor. A specialist vein doctor can help you determine the appropriate options for your vein disease treatment. With modern therapies, there’s minimal discomfort and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. In fact, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease when medically necessary.

What Causes Bulging Veins?

A common cause of bulging veins in legs is varicose or spider veins that appear below the surface of the skin and cause bulgy patches visible. These bulging veins are usually dark purple or blue and may also cause those who suffer from them pain or discomfort. Spider veins are simply the milder version of varicose veins.

Within each vein is a sequence of valves that stop blood from flowing backward, but if the valves aren’t functioning properly, blood can pool inside the vein. When the vein walls weaken, bulging veins can appear. Aging can contribute to this weakening and so can pressure on the veins due to pregnancy.

Another cause of bulging veins in legs is a condition called thrombophlebitis, which occurs when a blood clot forms within a vein. This is a potentially serious condition that can carry fatal risks if the clot moves to the lungs and blocks an artery.

How can bulging veins be treated?

A specialist vein doctor can perform an examination to determine the cause and suggest the appropriate bulging veins in legs treatment. Two highly effective, modern techniques include:

  • Endovenous Laser Thermal Ablation – After a local anesthesia is administered, the varicose vein specialist doctor introduces a small catheter into the vein with ultrasound guidance. This is followed by a small laser fiber, which delivers gentle laser energy, causing the vein to close. The procedure takes only about 10 minutes to do and requires no hospitalization or surgery center.
  • Sclerotherapy – During this procedure, the vein specialist uses a tiny needle to introduce an FDA-approved sclerosant into the vein, drops at a time. This gentle, yet effective medication causes the vein to collapse and close. Over time, the closed vein gets absorbed by the body and disappears. The sessions are typically completed in the office, within 20 minutes per leg.

Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long lasting scars or keloids.  There’s minimal discomfort and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.

Common Causes for Varicose Veins and Darkening of the Skin

Many people who have untreated varicose veins wonder what causes darkening of the skin and how to treat it, known as hyperpigmentation. Varicose veins occur when the veins in the legs are not functioning effectively at returning blood back up to the heart. Blood begins to pool and veins swell as the pressure inside increases, often causing inflammation and redness, which can advance to brown discoloration.

This brown staining around the ankles is caused from red blood cells leaking from the veins and into the surrounding skin. The skin may become dry, itchy or leathery, and can progress into open sores or skin ulcers, creating a serious risk of bacterial infection.

When there are changes in the skin due to varicose veins and spider veins, the earlier that treatment is sought with a specialist vein doctor, the better the prognosis. Once skin changes advance, they may become more difficult to treat.

How does technology help vein specialists treat infected veins?

With modern laser technology, varicose veins can be eliminated safely, effectively and virtually pain-free, with little to no downtime. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
