What is Vein Disease All About?

One of the most common conditions that can affect the overall health and wellbeing of both men and women of all ages is vein disease. Veins have valves which open and close to help return blood to the heart, but if these valves become damaged the blood can’t be properly returned. Therefore, blood can pool in the legs and weaken the vein walls due to the pressure. Additionally, as time goes by, the increased pressure can cause more valves to fail.

Some people may have visible signs of vein disease, such as varicose or spider veins, whereas others may have no outward indication. Spider veins are a symptom of early stage vein disease, and treating them can help stop their progression and improve their appearance. In addition to causing pain and discomfort, unsightly, bulging varicose veins that are left untreated can lead to additional health issues and a progressively worsening appearance.

What are the risks and treatments for vein disease?

The risks may include skin problems such as serious bacterial infection, discoloration due to blood leaking from the vessels and into the tissue, skin thickening or ulceration, and eczema. Other indications may be leg cramping, restless leg syndrome, or swelling, and there are risks for even more serious complications.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of vein disease, it’s important to have an evaluation with a specialist vein doctor. A specialist vein doctor can help you determine the appropriate options for your vein disease treatment. With modern therapies, there’s minimal discomfort and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. In fact, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease when medically necessary.

What Causes Bulging Veins?

A common cause of bulging veins in legs is varicose or spider veins that appear below the surface of the skin and cause bulgy patches visible. These bulging veins are usually dark purple or blue and may also cause those who suffer from them pain or discomfort. Spider veins are simply the milder version of varicose veins.

Within each vein is a sequence of valves that stop blood from flowing backward, but if the valves aren’t functioning properly, blood can pool inside the vein. When the vein walls weaken, bulging veins can appear. Aging can contribute to this weakening and so can pressure on the veins due to pregnancy.

Another cause of bulging veins in legs is a condition called thrombophlebitis, which occurs when a blood clot forms within a vein. This is a potentially serious condition that can carry fatal risks if the clot moves to the lungs and blocks an artery.

How can bulging veins be treated?

A specialist vein doctor can perform an examination to determine the cause and suggest the appropriate bulging veins in legs treatment. Two highly effective, modern techniques include:

  • Endovenous Laser Thermal Ablation – After a local anesthesia is administered, the varicose vein specialist doctor introduces a small catheter into the vein with ultrasound guidance. This is followed by a small laser fiber, which delivers gentle laser energy, causing the vein to close. The procedure takes only about 10 minutes to do and requires no hospitalization or surgery center.
  • Sclerotherapy – During this procedure, the vein specialist uses a tiny needle to introduce an FDA-approved sclerosant into the vein, drops at a time. This gentle, yet effective medication causes the vein to collapse and close. Over time, the closed vein gets absorbed by the body and disappears. The sessions are typically completed in the office, within 20 minutes per leg.

Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long lasting scars or keloids.  There’s minimal discomfort and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.

Finding Effective Treatment for Venous Leg Ulcers

Venous leg ulcers account for eighty percent of leg ulcerations as they are often recurrent and can last for years with severe complications. Additionally, because they are often resistant to healing and are prone to recurrence, they can significantly increase the risks for disease or death, and also have a consequential impact on the quality of life of those who suffer from them.

Leg ulcer symptoms often include a dull ache, tenderness or pain in the legs, swelling, eczema of the surrounding skin, varicose veins, and hyperpigmentation. Early signs of venous ulcers include darkened or discolored skin around the ankle, or skin that feels leathery or waxy to the touch.

The goals of leg ulcers treatment are to reduce edema, improve healing, and prevent recurrence. Endovenous laser ablation techniques have been shown to effectively treat leg ulcers and greatly reduce the risk of recurrence. Because smaller, newer ulcers are easier to treat than larger or infected leg ulcers, it’s crucial to seek treatment from an experienced vein specialist at the first sign of a venous skin ulcer.

Why Do I Need Gradient Compression Stockings?

Gradient compression stockings that fit properly can temporarily reduce the discomfort and skin damage effects of varicose and spider veins. These stockings achieve this result by providing a controlled amount of pressure that is greatest at the ankle and that gradually decreases as it moves up the leg. This increased pressure in the tissue of the lower area can help to prevent swelling, and promote better circulation.

However, these stockings must be worn while standing, are often difficult to put on, and generally lose some of their compression as time goes by, requiring regular replacement. Although gradient compression stockings are effective only temporarily, some insurance companies may require a trial of use of these before approving other treatments such as endovenous laser ablation or sclerotherapy for varicose veins.

How do I know if gradient compression stockings will help treat my varicose veins?

It’s important to consult with a specialist vein doctor to determine if gradient compression stockings can help to provide relief for your symptoms. A vein specialist can provide information on these and other therapies to treat your varicose and spider veins.

Understanding Your Spider Vein Treatment Options

Spider veins are dilated or stretched blood vessels which are close to the skin, generally with a branching pattern, and visible on the legs, face, hands, neck, or chest. They’re often progressive and usually increase in number and visibility with age.

These spider veins are unsightly, and can cause multiple symptoms such as pain, swelling or itching. Progressive refined sclerotherapy vein treatment offers an ideal treatment for these vessels, virtually erasing them from the skin.

When there are symptoms or concerns about the appearance of spider veins, this treatment option offers great results. In this procedure, the feeder veins are treated in a progressive pattern, starting from the top, and moving down in a band-like pattern. The vein specialist doctor injects the veins with a gentle yet effective FDA-approved solution that causes the damaged veins to collapse and close, causing the blood to reroute through healthier veins and restoring healthy circulation.

Over time, the closed vein gets absorbed by the body and disappears.  The vein specialists initiate the process and the body does the rest, naturally. Sclerotherapy doesn’t require anesthesia, can be done in the doctor’s office, and is minimally invasive and virtually pain-free, with little to no recovery time.

This vein treatment not only minimizes the unsightly appearance of spider veins, but also can provide relief from tired, aching, cramping, and restless legs. Importantly, studies have shown this safe, effective treatment can eliminate as many as 50-80% percent of treated veins after just a few sessions. Sclerotherapy sessions are typically completed within 20 minutes per leg, and most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment.

Common Misconceptions about Varicose Veins

Information is the most powerful force in the world, but misinformation about varicose veins can cause a huge amount of concern. We often take written information we’ve heard as truth and assume that it’s accurate. When it comes to information about varicose veins, a number of misconceptions are commonly held and sometimes shared.

  • Varicose veins are simply a cosmetic issue – Some people believe that varicose veins are merely an unattractive feature, rather than a medical condition which can cause pain, aching, fatigue, and swelling, in addition to increasing risks for other complications such as skin ulcers.
  • Insurance doesn’t cover varicose vein treatments – Varicose veins that cause symptoms are a medical problem, and most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
  • Only veins that bulge are a problem – Even when veins don’t visibly bulge, they can be the cause of leg pain, heaviness, swelling and many other symptoms, and ignoring varicose veins can lead to other complications.
  • Treatment of varicose veins is painful and requires a long recovery – Modern treatments such as endovenous laser thermal ablation (EVLT), provide a virtually painless, minimally invasive, FDA-approved way to treat varicose veins, which takes about only 10 minutes and produces immediate results in most patients, requiring little to no recuperation time.
  • Varicose veins will just come back – With current treatments, there is only a low percentage of individuals who actually have a re-occurrence of varicose veins once treated. The success rate of treatment by EVLT has been shown to be 98% based upon research.

When it’s time to seek treatment, our expert vascular specialists effectively treat varicose veins using the latest endovenous laser thermal ablation techniques. There’s minimal discomfort, and treatment is virtually painless. With this modern therapy, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment.
