Common Causes Behind Leg Ulcers – And What To Do

Typically, leg ulcers develop above the ankle, on the inside of the leg and can become painful if not treated by a professional vein expert. These leg ulcers generally take many weeks in order to heal, and require special treatment. The most common cause of leg ulcers, known as venous statis ulcers, develops when chronically high pressure in the veins causes damage to the skin.

Although, venous statis ulcers are responsible for about eighty percent of leg ulcerations, there may be other causes, such as malignant leg ulcers, or those caused by caused by arterial disease or diabetes. However, the latter two of the conditions usually result in ulcers on the foot rather than on the leg.

Leg ulcer symptoms

Leg ulcer symptoms often include a dull ache, tenderness or pain in the legs, swelling, eczema of the surrounding skin, varicose veins , and hyperpigmentation. The early signs of venous ulcers may include darkened or discolored skin around the ankle, or skin that feels leathery or waxy to the touch.

Leg ulcer treatment

The objectives of leg ulcer treatment are to reduce swelling, improve healing, and prevent recurrence. Fortunately, endovenous laser ablation techniques have been shown to effectively treat leg ulcers and greatly reduce the risk of recurrence. However, because smaller, newer ulcers are easier to treat than larger or infected leg ulcers, it’s crucial to seek treatment from an experienced vein specialist at the first sign of a venous skin ulcer.

What Causes Bulging Veins?

A common cause of bulging veins in legs is varicose or spider veins that appear below the surface of the skin and cause bulgy patches visible. These bulging veins are usually dark purple or blue and may also cause those who suffer from them pain or discomfort. Spider veins are simply the milder version of varicose veins.

Within each vein is a sequence of valves that stop blood from flowing backward, but if the valves aren’t functioning properly, blood can pool inside the vein. When the vein walls weaken, bulging veins can appear. Aging can contribute to this weakening and so can pressure on the veins due to pregnancy.

Another cause of bulging veins in legs is a condition called thrombophlebitis, which occurs when a blood clot forms within a vein. This is a potentially serious condition that can carry fatal risks if the clot moves to the lungs and blocks an artery.

How can bulging veins be treated?

A specialist vein doctor can perform an examination to determine the cause and suggest the appropriate bulging veins in legs treatment. Two highly effective, modern techniques include:

  • Endovenous Laser Thermal Ablation – After a local anesthesia is administered, the varicose vein specialist doctor introduces a small catheter into the vein with ultrasound guidance. This is followed by a small laser fiber, which delivers gentle laser energy, causing the vein to close. The procedure takes only about 10 minutes to do and requires no hospitalization or surgery center.
  • Sclerotherapy – During this procedure, the vein specialist uses a tiny needle to introduce an FDA-approved sclerosant into the vein, drops at a time. This gentle, yet effective medication causes the vein to collapse and close. Over time, the closed vein gets absorbed by the body and disappears. The sessions are typically completed in the office, within 20 minutes per leg.

Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long lasting scars or keloids.  There’s minimal discomfort and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.

Finding Effective Treatment for Venous Leg Ulcers

Venous leg ulcers account for eighty percent of leg ulcerations as they are often recurrent and can last for years with severe complications. Additionally, because they are often resistant to healing and are prone to recurrence, they can significantly increase the risks for disease or death, and also have a consequential impact on the quality of life of those who suffer from them.

Leg ulcer symptoms often include a dull ache, tenderness or pain in the legs, swelling, eczema of the surrounding skin, varicose veins, and hyperpigmentation. Early signs of venous ulcers include darkened or discolored skin around the ankle, or skin that feels leathery or waxy to the touch.

The goals of leg ulcers treatment are to reduce edema, improve healing, and prevent recurrence. Endovenous laser ablation techniques have been shown to effectively treat leg ulcers and greatly reduce the risk of recurrence. Because smaller, newer ulcers are easier to treat than larger or infected leg ulcers, it’s crucial to seek treatment from an experienced vein specialist at the first sign of a venous skin ulcer.

Why Do I Need Gradient Compression Stockings?

Gradient compression stockings that fit properly can temporarily reduce the discomfort and skin damage effects of varicose and spider veins. These stockings achieve this result by providing a controlled amount of pressure that is greatest at the ankle and that gradually decreases as it moves up the leg. This increased pressure in the tissue of the lower area can help to prevent swelling, and promote better circulation.

However, these stockings must be worn while standing, are often difficult to put on, and generally lose some of their compression as time goes by, requiring regular replacement. Although gradient compression stockings are effective only temporarily, some insurance companies may require a trial of use of these before approving other treatments such as endovenous laser ablation or sclerotherapy for varicose veins.

How do I know if gradient compression stockings will help treat my varicose veins?

It’s important to consult with a specialist vein doctor to determine if gradient compression stockings can help to provide relief for your symptoms. A vein specialist can provide information on these and other therapies to treat your varicose and spider veins.

Understanding Your Spider Vein Treatment Options

Spider veins are dilated or stretched blood vessels which are close to the skin, generally with a branching pattern, and visible on the legs, face, hands, neck, or chest. They’re often progressive and usually increase in number and visibility with age.

These spider veins are unsightly, and can cause multiple symptoms such as pain, swelling or itching. Progressive refined sclerotherapy vein treatment offers an ideal treatment for these vessels, virtually erasing them from the skin.

When there are symptoms or concerns about the appearance of spider veins, this treatment option offers great results. In this procedure, the feeder veins are treated in a progressive pattern, starting from the top, and moving down in a band-like pattern. The vein specialist doctor injects the veins with a gentle yet effective FDA-approved solution that causes the damaged veins to collapse and close, causing the blood to reroute through healthier veins and restoring healthy circulation.

Over time, the closed vein gets absorbed by the body and disappears.  The vein specialists initiate the process and the body does the rest, naturally. Sclerotherapy doesn’t require anesthesia, can be done in the doctor’s office, and is minimally invasive and virtually pain-free, with little to no recovery time.

This vein treatment not only minimizes the unsightly appearance of spider veins, but also can provide relief from tired, aching, cramping, and restless legs. Importantly, studies have shown this safe, effective treatment can eliminate as many as 50-80% percent of treated veins after just a few sessions. Sclerotherapy sessions are typically completed within 20 minutes per leg, and most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment.

When is the Right Time to Visit a Specialist Vein Doctor?

For many people, leg swelling, leg pain, itching, and throbbing interrupts their rest and their normal activities, and can be a significant health problem. Frequently, people who suffer with leg concerns such as removal of their varicose veins, treatment for leg ulcers or restless leg syndrome, wonder when it’s the right time to seek professional help.

The answer is that the best time to seek medical advice is when a symptom becomes apparent. The earlier that treatment is sought, the more likely that the progressive consequences can be curbed. Varicose veins and spider veins, leg ulcers and restless legs are health concerns, and the conditions won’t improve without treatment. For example, smaller, newer leg ulcers are easier to treat than larger or infected leg ulcers, so it’s crucial to seek treatment from an experienced vein specialist at the first sign. These are progressive conditions that can result in pain, loss of sleep, and diminished quality of life.

Fortunately, there’s been no better time than now to seek help, as new technology has made vein treatments available that are virtually pain-free, and require no down time. With endovenous laser thermal ablation, a local anesthesia is administered before a varicose vein specialist introduces a small catheter into the vein with ultrasound guidance. This is followed by a small laser fiber, which delivers gentle laser energy, causing the vein to close. The procedure takes only about 10 minutes to do and requires no hospitalization or surgery center.

Another treatment available now is sclerotherapy. During this procedure, a vein specialist uses a tiny needle to introduce an FDA-approved sclerosant into the vein, drops at a time.

There’s minimal discomfort,  and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.

Often, restless legs can be helped through lifestyle changes, but when these alterations aren’t effective, there are several FDA-approved medications available. These include some neurotransmitters (dopaminergics), benzodiazepines for sleeping, narcotics to relieve pain, and anticonvulsants.

When painful, heavy, tired, or restless legs, are affecting your quality of life, rest, or exercise, don’t wait. Learn how the vein specialist doctors at Goldman Vein Institute can help you get relief now.
