Tips for Making Your Recovery from Laser Vein Removal Quick and Easy

Many people are relieved to discover that recent technology has resulted in new treatments for varicose and spider veins. In previous years, treatment required hospitalization and a long period of recovery time afterward. Now, new procedures such as endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy, performed by specialist vein doctors, allow safe, effective, minimally invasive, and virtually pain-free methods for treatment. After treatment, patients can return home within hours and experience little to no down-time.

With the decision to have laser vein removal or sclerotherapy for varicose veins or spider veins, the days of self-consciousness and painful, tired, achy legs are nearly over. The following are a few hints on how to make a fast and simple recovery.

  • Wear compression stockings to help speed healing time and help relieve any discomfort.
  • Walk gently on flat surfaces each day, at least twice, even if it’s for short 20 minute walks.
  • Don’t stand or sit for long periods, make sure to break it up by moving periodically.
  • Elevate the legs above the heart for 15 minutes twice a day. It can help alleviate any swelling or bruising.
  • Avoid hot baths or saunas for two weeks.
  • Resume normal activity, but avoid vigorous movement such as running or heavy lifting for a couple of weeks.
  • Beware of prolonged sitting for air travel or car trips. If travel is unavoidable, get up and walk around for at least 10-15 minutes each hour.
  • Keep direct sunlight off of treated legs for two weeks.

Although treatments may be fast and painless, it’s important to make sure that care is taken following the procedure in order to allow the best healing.

Happy New Year! Let’s Make Your 2017 a Year Free of Leg Pain

Heaviness, throbbing, burning, aching, muscle cramping, tiredness, pain and swelling in the legs are the ways people describe the symptoms caused by their varicose veins. Certainly, bulging, discolored varicose veins are cosmetically unappealing, but the leg pain caused by varicose veins can be debilitating, changing the quality of life for those who suffer from them.

Since many people who suffer from varicose veins keep them hidden, it may be surprising just how common they really are. 1 in 2 people over the age of 50, or approximately 30 million Americans are affected by varicose veins.

Although some may believe that varicose veins aren’t dangerous, if left untreated venous disease can progress, causing ankle swelling, discoloration, leg ulcers, bleeding, and blood clots. Therefore, it’s important to understand that it isn’t necessary to live with these conditions another year, because treatment is available. Specialist vein doctors are utilizing new technology for virtually pain-free varicose vein removal, treatment of leg ulcers, and leg swelling. Two of these revolutionary therapies are:

  • Endovenous Laser Thermal Ablation – After a local anesthesia is administered, a varicose vein specialist introduces a small catheter into the vein with ultrasound guidance. This is followed by a small laser fiber, which delivers gentle laser energy, causing the vein to close. The procedure takes only about 10 minutes to do and requires no hospitalization or surgery center.
  • Sclerotherapy – During this procedure, a varicose vein specialist uses a tiny needle to introduce an FDA-approved sclerosant into the vein, drops at a time. This gentle, yet effective medication causes the vein to collapse and close. Over time, the closed vein gets absorbed by the body and disappears. The sessions are typically completed in the office, within 20 minutes per leg.

Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long lasting scars or keloids.  There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.

It’s a New Year! Now is the time to make a resolution to start over and make changes for your health and happiness. If you suffer from varicose veins, don’t be discouraged. Don’t ignore your pain, instead, set a goal to live without it. The vein specialist doctors at Goldman Vein Institute can help you achieve your resolutions this New Year and can help get you relief from your pain.

Fast, Effective Pain Relief for Leg Ulcers Using Laser Technology

Chronic venous insufficiency is a condition in which blood doesn’t flow up normally through the veins in the legs toward the heart. Sometimes, people with untreated venous insufficiency develop open sores, which are called venous skin ulcers. These leg ulcers develop in areas where blood pools, and swelling interferes with the movement of oxygen and nutrients through the tissues. They generally appear just above the ankle on the inside of the leg, and can be very painful. When left untreated, they can quickly become infected or even gangrenous.

There are more than 200,000 reported cases per year, and the risk of venous skin ulcers rises with age, occurring more often in women than men. They are linked to a family history of varicose veins, an inactive lifestyle, or to jobs that require many hours of standing. These leg ulcers affect about 1 in 1,000 people at some point their lives, and 20 in 1,000 people by the time they are in their 80’s.

The most common early symptom is chronically swollen ankles. There may also be dull aching, cramping, or feeling of heaviness in the legs and feet that becomes worse after prolonged standing.  Typically a red, irritated skin rash then develops into an open wound. Venous ulcers are usually recurrent, and open ulcers can persist from weeks to years.

Fortunately, doctors are now able to utilize new laser technology for chronic venous stasis ulcer treatment, to relieve the pain and begin healing. The laser treatment is used on certain veins in the leg to reduce the pressure around the venous ulcers. This laser treatment works by sending strong bursts of light onto the vein, which makes the vein slowly fade and disappear, with no need for incisions.

The vein specialists at the Goldman Vein Institute strongly encourage patients to seek treatment for venous skin ulcers and other complications of venous insufficiency. In our state-of-the-art vein clinic, Dr. Goldman and Dr. Varghese-Goldman use the latest in vein treatment technology to help patients get back on their feet and find relief from painful ulcers and swollen, aching, and tired legs.

5 Common Treatments for Varicose Veins

More than 40 million Americans have varicose or spider veins. Varicose veins in the legs are dark purple or blue and may look twisted and bulging. Spider veins are smaller. Spider veins often resemble a spider’s web and vary in size. They’re typically red or blue and although they are often on the legs, they may also be seen on the face.

In addition to being unsightly and sometimes painful, another common complaint is itchy varicose veins. This is caused by a skin condition known as varicose eczema, which is due to increased pressure in the veins. Unfortunately, It is estimated that one in five people over the age of 70 develop varicose eczema.

Fortunately, treatment is available by much less invasive procedures than in previous years, and can generally be treated on an outpatient basis. Below are five common varicose vein treatments and spider vein treatments, which are available to treat unattractive, painful, and often itchy varicose veins.

  • Compression Stockings – The first approach to treating varicose veins is often compression stockings. These socks are designed to apply pressure to the legs in order to help move blood upward and are worn all day. They may help provide some relief from symptoms.
  • Endovenous Laser Ablation – With the help of ultrasound-guided laser technology, endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), or endovenous laser treatment (ELT), is a minimally invasive, FDA-approved procedure which produces immediate results in most patients and requires little to no recuperation time.
  • Visually-guided sclerotherapy – This is often used to treat spider veins near the skin’s surface, known as superficial veins. The procedure takes only about 20 minutes to complete, minimizes their unsightly appearance, and can provide relief from symptoms with no recovery time needed.
  • Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy – The vein specialist can treat symptoms in larger varicose veins and surrounding spider veins that are difficult to reach. This safe and effective treatment uses VARITHENA™, an FDA-approved sclerosant, to eliminate unsightly varicose veins with pinpoint accuracy.
  • Vein Stripping – Varicose veins can also be physically removed by a surgeon through incisions. It is not the most favored option due to the number of incisions usually required, and also because of the length of recovery time needed. This is usually reserved for very large, painful, bulging varicose veins.

When it’s time to seek treatment, our expert vascular specialists effectively treat varicose veins, spider veins, and other symptoms of venous disease using the latest endovenous ablation and sclerotherapy techniques.

There’s minimal discomfort, and treatment is virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
