Did You Know? You Don’t Need Surgery to Remove Varicose Veins

Often, people suffering from varicose veins are afraid that the only way to treat them is through surgery or complicated medical procedures. Many people have only heard of painful vein stripping surgery, where varicose veins are removed by a surgeon through a number of incisions, and requiring a lengthy recovery time post-operatively.

However, non-surgical, minimally invasive treatments are now available, which can be performed right in the doctor’s office. The procedures are virtually painless with little to no recovery time needed, and are covered by most major health insurance carriers when medically necessary.

Two of these modern therapies for varicose veins include endovenous laser thermal ablation (EVLT) and ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy.  Both of these offer safe, effective, FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment options. In about 10 ten minutes, with the help of ultrasound-guided laser technology, endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) can produce immediate results, while ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy uses VARITHENA™, an FDA-approved sclerosant, to eliminate varicose veins with pinpoint accuracy. So there’s no reason to put off treatment for your varicose veins any longer.

When it’s time to seek treatment, our expert vascular specialists can effectively treat varicose veins using the latest endovenous ablation and sclerotherapy techniques. There’s minimal discomfort, and treatment is virtually painless, and with these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment.

Varicose Vein Removal the Surgery-free Way

Approximately one out of every two people age 50 and older are affected by varicose veins, and 15-25% of all adults. It’s a common condition, but one which can cause disfigurement, disability and impairment to quality of life. Although vein disease occurs more frequently in women, about 40% of all men develop varicose veins by the age of 65.

Traditionally, only highly invasive surgical remedies were available for varicose vein removal or for the removal of smaller spider veins, but now, varicose vein specialists offer new options, which are available to replace old-fashioned surgical methods. For those who are experiencing varicose or spider veins and who would like a non-surgical option, there are two highly-effective treatments to consider.

  • Endovenous Laser Thermal Ablation – After a local anesthesia is administered, a varicose vein specialist introduces a small catheter into the vein with ultrasound guidance. This is followed by a small laser fiber, which delivers gentle laser energy, causing the vein to close. The procedure takes only about 10 minutes to do and requires no hospitalization or surgery center.
  • Sclerotherapy – During this procedure, a varicose vein specialist uses a tiny needle to introduce an FDA-approved sclerosant into the vein, drops at a time. This gentle, yet effective medication causes the vein to collapse and close. Over time, the closed vein gets absorbed by the body and disappears. The sessions are typically completed in the office, within 20 minutes per leg.

Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long lasting scars or keloids.  There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
