How to Relieve Pain from Your Varicose Veins

Some varicose veins are deeper in the body rather than visible on the surface of the skin. Others appear as gnarled, bulging, discolored veins on the skin surface. However, whether visible or not they can cause varying degrees of pain or discomfort to those who have them.

The symptoms may include leg achiness, pain, heaviness, itching, fatigue, cramping, restless legs and many other indications. These symptoms may become more pronounced on hotter days because of dilation of the veins, can worsen with prolonged sitting or standing due to blood pooling, and may be more bothersome as the day progresses.

Although lifestyle changes may not prevent or cure varicose veins, they may help alleviate some symptoms. Water can be a benefit in a couple of ways. Immersing legs in cool water can bring down swelling and help blood vessels to shrink. Additionally, drinking plenty of water and staying hydrated can help with circulation. Since heat can cause swelling and throbbing, avoid hot baths and hot tubs.

Elevating the legs above the heart for at least 15 minutes can help blood flow back toward the heart rather than pooling in the ankles and assist with relieving pain and swelling. In addition, changing positions frequently, taking a break with a short walk, and frequent stretching can all help blood circulate.

Avoiding tight-fitting clothes and high heels can reduce pressure and discomfort. Comfortable clothing and shoes in combination with compression stockings put on first thing in the morning can provide some relief throughout the day.

Lastly, eating a nutritious diet and maintaining a healthy weight and an active lifestyle can improve circulation and take extra pressure off the veins.

Although each of these actions may help to alleviate symptoms, they do not remove the underlying condition. To effectively resolve pain and discomfort, and to prevent vein health from worsening, and creating further health risks such as clotting or skin ulcers, it’s important to consult with a varicose vein specialist doctor. In fact, if there is a sudden increase in leg pain, redness, swelling, sores, or fever, it is vital to be seen.

For those who are experiencing varicose or spider veins and who would like a varicose vein removal surgery option, there are two highly-effective treatments to consider, endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy.

These safe, virtually painless, and highly effective procedures can be completed in just minutes per leg typically right in the doctor’s office. Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long-lasting scars or keloids.

With these modern vein removal therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
