Don’t Let Varicose Vein Pain Stop You from Achieving Your Exercise Goals

Studies indicate that the major effects of varicose veins are on the functional aspects of the quality of people’s lives. Those who have varicose veins or spider veins may suffer from many painful symptoms including heavy or aching legs, swelling, night cramps, heat or burning sensation, restless legs, throbbing, itching or tingling sensation, and skin changes or ulceration.

In addition to enduring these discomforts, it is often a requirement to elevate the legs and avoid prolonged sitting or standing, which can severely impact the activities of daily living. Unfortunately, these symptoms and limitations typically increase with aging, and even those without severe symptoms are troubled by significant functional limitations.

Although exercise should always be part of a healthy lifestyle, discomfort from varicose veins can make exercise difficult. In addition, while exercise can help the symptoms of varicose veins, it won’t remove them.

Aerobic exercise such as walking, biking, running, are all good activities for getting blood circulating and promoting healthy veins. However, it’s important to be careful not to overdo when you have varicose veins, as strenuous activities can put too much strain on the legs.

However, when exercise causes too much discomfort it may be time to consider their removal. For those who are experiencing varicose or spider veins and who would like a non-surgical option, varicose vein specialists recommend two highly-effective treatments, endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy for varicose veins.

A specialist vein doctor can typically complete these treatments in the office, within just minutes per leg. Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long-lasting scars or keloids.  There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless.

With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.

Important Early Warning Signs of Venous Leg Ulcers

Leg ulcers symptoms often include a dull ache, tenderness or pain in the legs, swelling, eczema of the surrounding skin, varicose veins, and hyperpigmentation. Early signs of venous stasis ulcers include darkened or discolored skin around the ankle, or skin that feels leathery or waxy to the touch.

Many people who have untreated varicose veins wonder what causes darkening of the skin, known as hyperpigmentation. Varicose veins occur when the veins in the legs are not functioning effectively at returning blood back up to the heart. Blood begins to pool and veins swell as the pressure inside increases, often causing inflammation and redness, which can advance to brown discoloration.

This brown staining around the ankles is caused from red blood cells leaking from the veins and into the surrounding skin. The skin may become dry, itchy or leathery, and can progress into open sores or leg ulcers, creating a serious risk of bacterial infection.

Leg ulcers are often recurrent, and open ulcers can last from weeks to years with severe complications. Additionally, because they are often resistant to healing and are prone to recurrence, they can significantly increase the risks for disease or death, and also have a consequential impact on the quality of life of those who suffer from them.

When there are changes in the skin due to varicose veins, the earlier treatment is sought with a specialist vein doctor, the better the prognosis. Once skin changes advance, they may become more difficult to treat.

The goals of leg ulcers treatment are to reduce edema, improve healing, and prevent recurrence. Endovenous laser ablation techniques have been shown to effectively treat leg ulcers and greatly reduce the risk of recurrence. Because smaller, newer ulcers are easier to treat than larger or infected leg ulcers, it’s crucial to seek treatment from an experienced vein specialist at the first sign of a venous skin ulcer.

Laser Treatment is a Safe, Effective Answer to Facial Varicose Veins

Varicose veins can occur any place on the body, but commonly appear on the face. Varicose veins on the face are also known as spider veins due to their resemblance to a spider’s web. These dilated red, purple, or blue capillaries that are often found around the eyes, cheeks, chin, or neck, are visible because of their proximity to the surface of the skin.

These unsightly varicose veins on the face, while typically a cosmetic problem, may also be a symptom of the body’s overall health, as they are actually injured veins or capillaries. Pressure from long-term inflammation, obesity, or high blood pressure can cause damage to vessel walls. However, simply rubbing or washing the skin too roughly may also be the cause of broken capillaries, especially around the delicate eye areas.

Aging can also be a factor in the development of facial spider veins due to weakened veins and skin. In addition, too much sun exposure, certain skin diseases, smoking, exposure to pollutants or toxins, stress, insomnia, or a lack of physical activity can also be contributing factors.

It is estimated that at some point, approximately 55% of the population will be affected by varicose veins on the face and once facial spider veins appear, they typically require treatment in order to disappear. A varicose vein specialist can help treat these facial veins through two highly effective laser treatments for varicose veins.

Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized with laser vein removal, there are no long-lasting scars or keloids.  There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With this modern therapy, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment.

What Sports and Exercises Can Help Prevent Spider Veins?

Spider veins in legs can cause swelling, pain, and appear unsightly. Although there are many causes that may contribute to spider veins, a moderate exercise program can help prevent them since it can improve vein, skin and overall health.

Increasing activity can affect how well the veins function, work and repair. Strong leg muscles create more intense muscle contractions, which keep up the circulation of blood and reduce blood pooling. Walking is one of the easiest, most practical, and effective ways to help prevent spider veins in legs. Keeping the legs in motion improves their circulation.

Breaking up hours of sitting with even short periods of movement is helpful. Activity can be increased in small ways such as parking a little further away, going for a brief walk at lunch, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

Swimming also builds leg strength and enhances blood flow. The increased buoyancy and reduced gravity that water provides decreases pressure on spider veins, thereby enhancing circulation. Additionally, exercising in water can be easier on joints, improves flexibility, and is cooler during warm weather too.

Taking a bike ride if one is available or just lying on the floor, with legs elevated and pedaling as if on a bike improves circulation. Any moderate exercise that improves circulation and tones muscles can reduce the risk of developing spider veins in legs, and slow or prevent the development of new ones.

Aerobic exercise such as walking, biking, and swimming, are all good activities for getting blood circulating and promoting healthy veins. However, it’s important to be careful not to overdo when you have spider veins, as strenuous activities can put too much strain on the legs.

Although exercise should always be part of a healthy lifestyle and may improve or prevent spider veins, it typically won’t eliminate them. However, modern spider vein treatment can. If spider veins are already present, vein treatment is available. Laser treatment for spider veins not only minimizes their unsightly appearance, but can also provide relief from tired, aching, cramping, and restless legs.

Varicose Veins and Men – More Common Than You Think

About fifty percent of all men will experience varicose veins at some point in their lives. Varicose veins are not simply a cosmetic issue nor are they a condition that only women suffer from. These veins can cause significant pain or discomfort and may lead to many other complications, which can create difficulties in daily quality of life and restrict many activities.

When vein walls are weak, veins can expand and the valves that regulate blood flow in the vein no longer function properly. When this happens, bulging, gnarly looking varicose veins can appear, along with symptoms such as throbbing, swelling, and decreased mobility.

Although varicose veins may affect men of any age, the risk increases with aging due to loss of muscle mass and tissue tone along with the weakening of venous walls. Varicose veins are a chronic medical condition that will progress without treatment, adding further risks of other complications such as leg ulcers, vein bleeding, or blood clots.

However, vein disease treatments have come a long way with leading-edge laser technology. Today, laser surgery for varicose veins can provide a method for treating varicose veins, varicose veins bleeding, and leg ulcers with a quick, noninvasive, and virtually pain-free alternative. These highly-effective treatments are available to both men and women.

Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized, there are no long-lasting scars or keloids.  There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.

Leg Pain from Varicose Veins? Here Are Our Tips for Long-distance Travelers

As a result of their varicose veins, many people experience leg pain. These veins may appear as swollen, bulging, and gnarled, or they may be internal without visible external indications. However, whether veins are visible or not, painful symptoms can include a feeling of heaviness or achiness in the legs, burning, throbbing, swelling, itchiness, and muscle cramping, especially after extended sitting or standing.

Therefore, many people are concerned about the effects of long-distance traveling on their varicose veins. The problem with most forms of travel including flying, taking a train, or driving is that there are typically extended periods of standing and sitting. Maintaining a static position for prolonged periods of time reduces the blood flow in the body and can also increase the chances of clotting.

However, we recommend these steps to help reduce your symptoms while traveling and to decrease your risks for clotting and other complications:

  • Change positions frequently
  • Get up and walk around whenever possible
  • Wear compression stockings, loose clothing and comfortable footwear
  • Stay hydrated

Consider consulting a vein specialist doctor who can evaluate varicose veins prior to traveling. An evaluation could be especially important during pregnancy or when taking oral contraceptives as these are additional risk factors. However, if you are concerned about leg pain and the effects of traveling on your varicose veins, you can easily have them treated and removed.

Varicose veins that are left untreated can lead to a number of serious medical conditions, and in most cases, the symptoms only get worse. Some complications of varicose veins that remain untreated may include leg ulcers, varicose veins bleeding, and blood clots, along with other risks that can require urgent medical attention.

However, there’s no reason to suffer from unsightly, painful varicose veins and their associated risks anymore. Treating varicose veins has come a long way with leading-edge laser technology. Today, laser surgery for varicose veins can provide a method for treatment with a quick, noninvasive, and virtually pain-free alternative.

Vein Stripping vs Laser Vein Removal for Varicose Veins

Approximately one out of every two people aged 50 and older are affected by varicose veins. Although it’s a common condition, it is one that can cause disfigurement, disability and impairment to quality of life. Although vein disease occurs more frequently in women, about 40% of all men develop varicose veins by the age of 65.

Traditionally, only highly invasive surgical remedies were available for varicose vein removal. Vein stripping is a procedure where varicose veins are physically removed by a surgeon through incisions. It is not the most favored option due to the number of incisions usually required, and also because of the length of recovery time needed.

However, varicose vein specialists now offer new laser vein removal options, which are available to replace old-fashioned surgical methods. Two of these highly-effective modern methods include:

  • Endovenous Laser Ablation– With the help of ultrasound-guided laser technology, endovenous laser ablation is a minimally invasive, FDA-approved procedure which produces immediate results in most patients and requires little to no recuperation time. After a local anesthesia is administered, a varicose vein specialist introduces a small catheter into the vein with ultrasound guidance. This is followed by a small laser fiber, which delivers gentle laser energy, causing the vein to close. The procedure takes only about 10 minutes to do and requires no hospitalization or surgery center.
  • Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins – During this procedure, a varicose vein specialist uses a tiny needle to introduce an FDA-approved sclerosant into the vein, drops at a time. This gentle, yet effective medication causes the vein to collapse and close. Over time, the closed vein gets absorbed by the body and disappears. The sessions are typically completed in the office, within 20 minutes per leg.

When it’s time to seek treatment, a specialist vein doctor can effectively treat varicose veins, spider veins, and other symptoms of venous disease using the latest endovenous ablation and sclerotherapy techniques.

Hypertension – It Could Be Behind Your Varicose Veins

In order to pump blood throughout your body, the entire cardiovascular system must function as a whole. When one part of the system doesn’t function correctly, it requires the whole system to help compensate for it.

Varicose veins are a symptom of a serious condition known as chronic venous hypertension or high blood pressure within the veins. Continuously elevated blood pressure in the veins damages the valves in vessels and weakens the vein walls permanently. In addition to the swelling, pain, heaviness, fatigue, and other symptoms that are often associated with this condition, it can also lead to other risks such as the development of leg ulcers or blood clots.

When left untreated, varicose veins can sometimes cause high blood pressure or can even cause a sudden serious drop in blood pressure known as orthostatic hypotension. This drop in blood pressure when going from lying flat to a standing position may be partially due to the pooling of blood in varicose leg veins.

To help alleviate uncomfortable or painful symptoms and to avoid further risks and other complications, treatment is available with a specialist vein doctor. For those who are experiencing varicose or spider veins and would like a non-surgical option, there are two highly-effective treatments to consider, endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy for varicose veins. A varicose vein specialist can provide information and guidance as to which therapy might be best for you.

These gentle yet highly-effective procedures take only about minutes per leg to do and require no hospitalization or surgery center.

Tips to Help Your Leg Ulcers Heal Well

When blood doesn’t flow normally up through the veins in the legs toward the heart, the condition is known as chronic venous insufficiency. When left untreated, open sores may develop in areas where blood pools and swelling interferes with the movement of oxygen and nutrients through the tissues.

These sores are called venous stasis ulcers or leg ulcers. They generally appear just above the ankle on the inside of the leg, and can be very painful. When left untreated, they can quickly become infected or even gangrenous.

The most common early leg ulcers symptoms are chronically swollen ankles, and sometimes dull aching, cramping, or feeling of heaviness in the legs and feet that becomes worse after prolonged standing. Typically, a red, irritated skin rash then develops into an open wound. Venous ulcers are usually recurrent, and open ulcers can persist from weeks to years.

The best leg ulcers treatment available today utilizes new laser technology to relieve the pain and begin healing. The laser treatment is used on certain veins in the leg to reduce the pressure around the venous ulcers. It works by sending strong bursts of light onto the vein, which makes the vein slowly fade and disappear, with no need for incisions.

After treatment, there are a number of things that can be done in order to help leg ulcers heal well.

  • Swelling of the feet and ankles can be controlled through the use of compression bandages.
  • Exercising the legs can encourage better circulation. Move the feet up and down and rotate them at the ankles.
  • Stay active by regularly walking and avoid prolonged sitting or standing.
  • When sitting or lying down, keep legs elevated. Try to elevate the legs at least every hour.
  • Wear well-fitting footwear and comfortable clothing.
  • Eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet and try to reduce any excess weight.
  • Drink alcohol moderately and refrain from smoking.
  • Be careful to avoid injury to the leg.

The vein specialists at the Goldman Vein Institute strongly encourage patients to seek treatment for venous skin ulcers and other complications of venous insufficiency. In our state-of-the-art vein clinic, Dr. Goldmanand Dr. Varghese-Goldmanuse the latest in vein treatment technology to help patients get back on their feet and find relief from painful ulcers and swollen, aching, and tired legs.

Helpful Lifestyle Tips for Restless Leg Syndrome

Anemia, dialysis, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and damage to the nerves in hands and feet such as peripheral neuropathy from diabetes have all been associated with restless leg syndrome. Although it has not yet been discovered what causes restless leg syndrome, nor a cure, certain risk factors have been identified and many treatments exist for controlling its symptoms.

Restless leg syndrome is a neurological disorder and is characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs, and sometimes other parts of the body. There are often unusual or unpleasant sensations that are described as tingly, creepy-crawly, tugging, throbbing, or pulling, which accompany these impulses. Additionally, many people experience periodic limb movements or jerking of the arms or legs. Periodic limb movement disorder typically occurs in the evening and can severely disrupt sleep and reduce quality of life.

It is estimated that around 3 million people per year in the U.S., or approximately 7-8% of the population, suffers from restless leg syndrome. It can affect anyone, regardless of age, although women are more likely to experience restless leg syndrome than men, and it’s more common in middle-aged women or older. In fact, nearly a quarter of women develop the disease during pregnancy, but the symptoms frequently go away after giving birth.

Restless leg syndrome relief, which can help to decrease the symptoms, may be helped by certain lifestyle changes:

  • Reducing caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol
  • Increasing regular exercise
  • Getting more sleep
  • Taking a hot bath, warm shower, or applying heating pads
  • Having leg massages

When symptoms aren’t relieved through other methods, there are several FDA-approved medications for the treatment of RLS. These include some neurotransmitters (dopaminergics), benzodiazepines for sleeping, narcotics to relieve pain, and anticonvulsants.

When you need relief from the symptoms of restless leg syndrome, it’s important to consult a doctor who is an expert in the treatment of the disease. At the Goldman Vein Institute, you can schedule an appointment with one of our doctors, and begin to experience an alleviation of your discomfort today.

If you would like more information on restless leg syndrome relief treatment, please contact the Goldman Vein Institute today at one of our two convenient locations: Jupiter 561-625-9853 or Wellington 561-790-4550 or visit us at www.goldmanveininstitute.com.
