Health Alert: Watch for These Common Causes of Leg Pain in Seniors

Nearly everyone gets leg pain or aches from time to time, but if the cause isn’t something apparent like an injury from a fall or due to overuse, it may be important to discover some of the common causes of leg pain in seniors. Leg pain or aches can be due to a wide variety of causes, including varicose veins, blood clots, skin ulcers, and other conditions associated with venous insufficiency.

Varicose veins are one of the most common causes of leg pain and are often described as pain, heaviness, or a deep ache with varying degrees of pain. These blue or purple looking veins are typically found on the legs and feet, and are often swollen, bulging, twisted or lumpy in appearance. However, if the vein is deep within the body, it may be invisible. When this occurs, it is common to suffer with the discomfort for a long time before discovering that varicose veins are the hidden cause.

When varicose veins form blood clots close to the skin surface, the condition is called thrombophlebitis. Blood clots occur when the blood thickens and becomes gelatinous, disrupting the normal blood flow. This can cause pain, heat, tingling, discoloration, temperature changes in the leg, or hardness.

Deeper clots can cause a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT symptoms may include deep constant pain and swelling, cramping, aching tenderness, skin warmth, and discoloration. A blood clot left untreated in the leg can become an immediate risk for pulmonary embolism, a sudden blockage in a lung artery that is life-threatening.

Varicose veins can also be responsible for an itchy, inflamed rash, typically on the lower leg or ankle. A skin ulcer may develop or the skin may tear, which can be extremely painful. Veins can also burst and cause blood to pool in the area.

A varicose vein specialist can diagnose if your leg pain is a symptom of varicose veins, varicose veins bleeding, clotting, leg ulcers or other indications of venous insufficiency. It’s vital to seek medical advice when leg pain is sudden or persistent.

Although varicose veins may not be preventable, treating varicose veins is available through two highly-effective options known as endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy. Laser surgery for varicose veins utilizes no scalpels or sutures, so there are no long-lasting scars or keloids.  There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless.

With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.

Tips on Boosting Your Blood Circulation This Winter

Good blood circulation is vital to physical wellness. Oxygen and nutrients are delivered to the cells in the body and waste products are removed through circulation. Certain factors can affect good circulation such as blood pressure, heart health, and vein health, which can also be impacted by other health conditions including diabetes, cholesterol levels, and venous insufficiency.

Therefore, it’s easy to see that good circulation is a necessity for good health and circulation is improved by maintaining overall health and the habits that promote it. Avoiding all tobacco products is a great start. Controlling body weight and vein health by consuming foods that are high in fiber and nutrients and low in saturated fat and salt are an important step.

Regular exercise is always great for circulation, improving blood flow and easing pressure on the veins. Try leg lifts, calf raises, bicycle legs and side lunges to get the blood pumping. Low-impact exercise such as swimming, walking, or yoga can also be beneficial.

High heels and tight clothing and crossing the legs when sitting can restrict circulation. Elevating the legs above the heart for 15 minutes, 3-4 times per day, and changing sitting or standing positions regularly can all help to ease pressure on leg veins and help to prevent blood pooling.

Compression stockings can help by providing pressure that is greatest at the ankle and gradually decreasing as they move up the leg. The increased pressure in the tissue of the lower area of the leg can help minimize swelling and promote better circulation.

Healthy veins, vein valves, and arteries allow blood to pass through them from the heart and to return blood back from the legs. When veins become abnormal or diseased, the result is typically the development of spider veins or varicose veins and can often result in symptoms such as swelling, itching, pain, or discomfort.

When circulation is impaired and symptoms are painful it is important to consult with a varicose vein specialist. A specialist vein doctor can effectively provide treatment for varicose veins using the latest endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy for varicose veins techniques in just minutes per leg.

Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long-lasting scars or keloids.  There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.

If you would like more information regarding boosting your circulation, or about laser surgery for varicose veins or spider veins, please contact the Goldman Vein Institute today at one of our two convenient locations:

Are Home Remedies Effective Varicose Vein Treatment?

Conditions that are caused by veins that have become abnormal or diseased may include spider or varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency, and their symptoms such as swelling, itching, and pain or discomfort. Home remedies may in some cases help to reduce the appearance and pain of varicose veins.

Although varicose veins and smaller spider veins may not be preventable, it is possible to stop the ones that already exist from getting worse and to delay the formation of new ones. Certain lifestyle changes can play a big role in helping to ease symptoms.

Exercise is always great for circulation, improving blood flow and easing pressure on the veins. Try leg lifts, calf raises, bicycle legs and side lunges to get the blood pumping. Regular low-impact exercise such as swimming, walking, or yoga and a diet that’s high in fiber and low in salt can also help by improving overall health and helping to control body weight.

Avoid high heels and tight clothing, refraining from crossing the legs when sitting, elevating the legs above the heart for 15 minutes, 3-4 times per day, and changing sitting or standing positions regularly can all help to alleviate pressure on the legs which can worsen varicose veins.

Compression stockings can help people with varicose veins by temporarily reducing the discomfort and skin damaging effects of varicose veins and spider veins. The stockings provide pressure that is greatest at the ankle and gradually decrease as they move up the leg. The increased pressure in the tissue of the lower area of the leg can help minimize swelling and promote better circulation.

However, home remedies cannot correct the underlying vein problem, they can only provide a temporary reduction of symptoms. When symptoms are painful and home remedies have not provided sufficient relief, varicose veins treatment can help.

What is Venous Insufficiency and How is it Treated?

Venous insufficiency is a condition that generally occurs when leg valves don’t allow blood in the veins to travel back to the heart. Dysfunctional valves can cause blood in the legs to pool, and varicose veins to form, the twisted and enlarged veins close to the surface of the skin.

When left untreated, venous insufficiency can cause many symptoms including leg swelling and pain, and sometimes serious complications, such as blood clots or leg ulcers. Increased pressure and swelling can cause varicose veins bleeding, tiny blood vessels in the legs bursting and resulting in tissue inflammation and damage. This can lead to ulcers or open sores on the skin, known as venous stasis ulcers. These ulcers can easily become infected and spread to the surrounding tissues.

Not only is the prevention of these complications vital, the complexities of treating varicose veins increase as the disease progresses. The earlier it is diagnosed and treated by a varicose vein specialist doctor, the better. Specialist vein doctors can now treat chronic venous insufficiency, and associated varicose and spider veins with two highly effective, non-surgical vein disease treatments, endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy for varicose veins.

Laser surgery for varicose veins can be completed in the office, in just minutes per leg.

What Happens During the Laser Vein Removal Process

Nearly half of all people age 50 and older are affected by varicose veins, and 15-25% of all adults. It’s a common condition, but one which can cause discomfort, disfigurement, disability and impairment to quality of life.

Removal of varicose veins improves circulation, which can alleviate associated symptoms of tiredness, swelling, pain and heaviness in the limb. Additionally, untreated venous disease is the main cause of more than 80% of all leg ulcers. Skin ulcers develop when an area of skin breaks down, exposing underlying tissue to air and bacteria.

Often, people suffering from varicose veins are afraid that the only way to treat them is through surgery. Many people have only heard of painful vein stripping surgery, where varicose veins are removed by a surgeon through a number of incisions, and requiring a lengthy recovery time post-operatively.

Although traditionally, only highly invasive surgical remedies were available for varicose vein removal or for the removal of smaller spider veins, varicose vein specialists now offer new laser vein removal options, which are available to replace old-fashioned surgical methods. For those who are experiencing varicose or spider veins and who would like a non-surgical option, there are two highly-effective treatments.

With endovenous laser ablation, after a local anesthesia is administered, the varicose vein specialist introduces a small catheter into the vein with ultrasound guidance. This is followed by a small laser fiber, which delivers gentle laser energy, causing the vein to close.   The procedure takes only about 10 minutes to do and requires no hospitalization or surgery center.

During sclerotherapy for varicose veins, the varicose vein specialist uses a tiny needle to introduce an FDA-approved sclerosant into the vein, drops at a time. This gentle, yet effective medication causes the vein to collapse and close.  Over time, the closed vein gets absorbed by the body and disappears. The sessions are typically completed in the office, within 20 minutes per leg.

Compression Stockings as a Varicose Vein Treatment Option

Compression stockings can help people with varicose veins by temporarily reducing the discomfort and skin damaging effects of varicose veins and spider veins. The stockings provide pressure that is greatest at the ankle and gradually decrease as they move up the leg. The increased pressure in the tissue of the lower area of the leg can help minimize swelling and promote better circulation.

Many people find their usage cumbersome. The stockings must be worn while they stand, are typically quite difficult to put on, and generally lose their compression as time goes by, thereby requiring regular replacement.

Additionally, compression stockings provide only a temporary reduction of symptoms. Although they cannot correct the underlying vein problem, some insurance companies may require a trial use of compression stockings before approving other more effective varicose veins treatment such as endovenous laser ablation or sclerotherapy for varicose veins. However, most major health insurance carriers do provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.

Endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy for varicose veins provide two highly-effective, minimally invasive, non-surgical varicose veins treatments that are available for those who desire a more permanent solution. These therapies offer improvement to both the comfort and appearance of painful and unsightly varicose veins and spider veins.

Consultation with a specialist vein doctor can help you determine the best varicose veins treatment to provide relief for your symptoms and to provide information on these and other safe and effective therapies to treat your varicose veins and spider veins.

No scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, therefore there are no long-lasting scars or keloids.  There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment.

Healthy Blood Pressure is Key to Healthy Veins

Varicose veins are a symptom of a serious condition known as chronic venous hypertension or high blood pressure within the veins. Continuously elevated blood pressure in the veins damages the valves in vessels and weakens the vein walls permanently. In addition to the swelling, pain, heaviness, fatigue, and other symptoms that are often associated with this condition, it can also lead to other risks such as the development of leg ulcers or blood clots.

In order to pump blood throughout your body, the entire cardiovascular system must function in concert. Therefore, when one part of the system doesn’t function correctly, it requires the whole system to have to compensate.

Additionally, specialist vein doctors report that if left untreated, varicose veins can sometimes cause high blood pressure or can even cause a sudden serious drop in blood pressure known as orthostatic hypotension. This drop in blood pressure when going from lying flat to a standing position may be partially due to the pooling of blood in varicose leg veins.

To help alleviate uncomfortable or painful symptoms and to avoid further risks and other complications, treatment is available for those who are experiencing varicose or spider veins. For people who would like a non-surgical option, there are two highly-effective treatments to consider, endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy for varicose veins. A varicose vein specialist can provide information and guidance as to which therapy might be best for you.

These gentle yet highly-effective procedures take only about minutes per leg to do and require no hospitalization or surgery center. Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long-lasting scars or keloids.

There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Restless Leg Syndrome – A Serious Health Condition

It is estimated that in the U.S., 5-15% of the population is living with a neurological disorder known as restless leg syndrome (RLS). It is characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs, and sometimes other parts of the body. Many people experience periodic limb movement disorder, which can cause jerking or twitching of the arms or legs. Typically, unusual or unpleasant sensations that are described as tingly, creepy-crawly, tugging, throbbing, or pulling accompany these impulses.

A major issue for people who have RLS is difficulty in falling or staying asleep, which can severely reduce their quality of life. In addition, one new study indicated that women with RLS were around 43% more likely to die from a heart condition making this an even more serious health risk.

RLS doesn’t just affect women, although it does affect more women than men and is more common in middle-aged women or older. Nearly 25% of women develop the disease during pregnancy, although symptoms frequently go away after giving birth. However, it can affect anyone, regardless of age.

It has not yet been discovered what causes restless leg syndrome, but certain risk factors have been identified, such as anemia, dialysis, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and damage to the nerves in hands and feet such as peripheral neuropathy from diabetes.

A cure for RLS is still unknown and diagnosis is through an evaluation of symptoms rather than a laboratory test. Certain lifestyle changes may help to decrease the symptoms, including, reducing caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol, while increasing regular exercise and healthy sleep. Additionally, some people may find relief from RLS with a hot bath or shower, heating pads or leg massages.

When symptoms aren’t relieved through other methods, recent studies indicate that treating venous insufficiency can relieve symptoms of RLS, with 98% of patients experiencing relief from RLS symptoms simply by treating their venous insufficiency.

When you are looking for restless leg syndrome relief, it’s important to consult a doctor who is an expert in the treatment of the disease. At the Goldman Vein Institute, you can schedule an appointment with one of our doctors, and begin to experience an alleviation of your discomfort today.

If you would like more information on restless leg syndrome treatment, please contact the specialists at the Goldman Vein Institute today at one of our two convenient locations:

5 Signs That You May Be Suffering from Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the lower leg or thigh. This can be life-threatening as the clot can break off, moving through the bloodstream and eventually blocking the blood flow in an artery in the lungs. This condition is known as a pulmonary embolism.

It is possible that a person with deep vein thrombosis may have no symptoms at all. However, there are five common signs too of DVT that could indicate this serious condition:

  • Cramping in the calf
  • Swelling in the extremities
  • Pain in the legs
  • Tenderness of the legs
  • Redness of the skin

If these symptoms appear, it’s vital to contact a varicose vein specialist immediately. A specialist vein doctor can use advanced duplex ultrasound technology to diagnose deep vein thrombosis. This non-invasive diagnostic technique takes less than 15 minutes and can be completed in the physician’s office.

Some of the risk factors for developing DVT include venous insufficiency in the lower extremities, varicose veins, obesity, and family history among others. Therefore, treating varicose veins and spider veins before more serious complications can occur is advisable.

For those who are experiencing varicose or spider veins and who would like a non-surgical option, there are two highly-effective treatments to consider, endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy for varicose veins that may help to prevent more serious complications such as DVT.

These gentle yet effective therapies are typically completed in the office, in just minutes per leg. There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long-lasting scars or keloids and with these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. Additionally, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.

Getting Back to Your Fitness Regime After Varicose Vein Surgery

fitness

Many active patients are concerned about exercise after varicose vein surgery. In the past, varicose vein surgery forced patients to be inactive for weeks, but with today’s advanced treatment options, long recovery periods are no longer necessary. In fact, after laser surgery for varicose veins, the recovery period is short and exercise can help with both healing and vein function.

After treating varicose veins, it is best to stay active, but avoid running, jumping or heavy lifting for a week or two. Gentle aerobic exercise like walking, swimming, stretching with yoga or tai chi, or leg lifts can help improve blood return to the heart while lowering pressure.  As healing progresses, activity can be increased gradually.

Intense exercise done too quickly after varicose vein surgery can create a risk of failure of the treated vessels to close. The treated veins need to shrink and ultimately dissolve. Therefore, limiting exercise that causes an elevated heart rate is advisable for a time. However, resuming most regular daily activities is possible immediately following varicose vein surgery.

Strenuous exercise performed too soon can also result in varicose veins bleeding. If this should occur, elevate the leg higher than the heart, apply pressure, then a pressure bandage or gauze with an elastic wrap.

Additionally, avoid activities that raise the temperature, such as hot yoga, a jacuzzi, long hot showers, or the steam room. Heat can contribute to dilation that may open the vein that the surgery is trying to constrict and dissolve.

Compression stockings may be advisable during exercise time to increase blood circulation, and wearing comfortable clothing and footwear can help to reduce pressure. Simply remember, the key after treatment is to start gently, and to increase gradually.

If you would like more information about exercise after varicose vein surgery, please contact the Goldman Vein Institute today at one of our two convenient locations:
