Recovery Time for Varicose Vein Treatment

Varicose veins, or abnormal veins with weak valves, appear visibly on the calves, thighs and the inside skin on the leg and can cause aching, throbbing or cramping in the legs. They can appear as thick ropes under the skin or as red, blue or purple discolorations.

Learn more about the treatments available for varicose veins and the recovery time associated with these treatments from the vein experts at Goldman Vein Institute.

Types of Varicose Vein Treatments

There are two types of treatments for varicose veins used at Goldman Vein Institute:

  • Endovenous Laser Thermal Ablation. This treatment is minimally invasive and uses laser light to seal weak or abnormal varicose veins. Only a 10 minute procedure, endovenous laser thermal ablation doesn’t require patients to be hospitalized and provides relief from swelling and pain in the legs.
  • Sclerotherapy. This treatment uses a sclerosant, a specialized vein solution, to seal varicose veins, restore circulation and reduce the risks associated with chronic venous insufficiency. Sclerotherapy is extremely effective, eliminating between 50 and 80 percent of treated varicose veins in just a few simple sessions. Sessions usually last around 20 minutes per leg.

What are Recovery Times for Varicose Vein Treatments Like?

Depending on the patient, recovery times may vary, but most varicose vein treatments take less than an hour in the office and don’t require any hospitalization or invasive surgery. Recovery takes little to no time and the majority of patients can resume normal activities immediately or shortly after treatments.

Results also vary, but most patients see a significant reduction in discomfort, visibility and pain of varicose veins in the legs.
