What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)?

Chronic venous insufficiency can be both disabling and painful. The condition is typically associated with varicose veins, the twisted and enlarged veins close to the surface of the skin. It generally occurs when leg valves don’t allow blood in the veins to travel back to the heart. These dysfunctional valves can cause blood in the legs to pool, and when left untreated, cause swelling, pain, and sometimes serious complications.

Not only is the prevention of these complications vital, the complexities of treatment increase as the disease progresses. The earlier it is diagnosed and treated by a varicose vein specialist doctor, the better.

CVI symptoms often include swelling in the legs and ankles along with aching or tiredness, leathery, flaking or itching skin on the legs or feet. When left untreated, increased pressure and swelling can cause tiny blood vessels in the legs to burst, resulting in tissue inflammation and damage, and leading to ulcers or open sores on the skin, known as venous stasis ulcers. These ulcers can easily become infected and spread to the surrounding tissues.

However, specialist vein doctors can now treat chronic venous insufficiency, and associated varicose and spider veins with two highly effective, non-surgical vein treatment options, endovenous laser ablation and sclerotherapy for varicose veins. These procedures can be completed in the office, in just minutes per leg.

Because no scalpels or sutures are utilized in either treatment, there are no long-lasting scars or keloids. There’s minimal discomfort, and most treatments are characterized as being virtually painless. With these modern therapies, most people can resume their daily activities immediately after treatment. In addition, most major health insurance carriers provide coverage for the treatment of vein disease and venous insufficiency when medically necessary.
